DTSA

About training provider

DTSA offers PGCE programmes in Early Years, Primary and Secondary, training 25-50 teachers each year. We work with the University of Derby and two placement schools from the local area, helping our trainee teachers to become work-ready across the year. These are largely school-based roles, for four days each week, with weekly sessions either at the University of Derby or in DTSA’s Professional Hub Sessions.

Since starting this programme, back in 2013, DTSA have had a strong employment rate with everyone who wants a full-time post getting successful employment by the end of the one-year course. We have found that the opportunity to work in two different placement schools enables trainees to experience their chosen education phase across the different Key Stages, and we host Education Placement Option (EPO) weeks for students in SEND settings or alternative phase schools, so Primary students can spend a week in Early Years or Secondary, and vice versa, so that our students learn about the whole system and the transition stages.

This course lasts for one year (from the end of August to the third week in July) and results in Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), a PGCE and 60 credits towards a Masters’ in Education (MA Ed). DTSA are a Collaborative Partner with the University of Derby, our staff and facilitators are Associate Lecturers at the university. This enables us to provide a well-balanced course of both academic development and practical teaching application. Our particular strengths is that our courses are run by those who have been senior school teachers, head teachers, and university academics which means that DTSA has both the practical and academic elements of expertise needed.

DTSA also run the UK STEM Learning’s – Science Learning Partnership (SLP), known as the Science Curriculum Hub for schools in Derby/shire and Nottingham/shire, and so provide additional relevant support for Early Years and Primary for the core science national curriculum subject and for relevant Secondary STEM subjects.
